For a couple of shows that I shot, I had to get a photo pass yes (such as: the K! Tour, Kill Hannah & Elliot Minor) but for others I was just in the audience, like everyone else.
To go about obtaining a photo pass, you really do need to have a portfolio at the ready. How you go about getting a pass, often varies. Usually you ask the bands management (via email) for them but as I said, you really do need a portfolio to show them (so they know that you’re not just wanting to get into the show for free) and it also depends on the band and venue their playing in.
